News: timmo tolkki ponders to cd or mp3 that is the question

Add web site image here
News:
28-01-2008:
Timmo Tolkki is intersted in your views about music, the debate about CD and mp3s. He would like your feedback.

Timmo says:

As you know, the cd sales are going down rapidly.
Also most of the big labels including Sony/BMG being the last, removed the copy protection from their mp3 online files. This is a big step. We may see record stores and record companies disappearing completely. This could mean that the music gets a lot cheaper to buy. How do you guys feel about this and what are you gonna do if there no more record stores to walk in and buy your records? :)
Some MP3 albums come with artwork as well and yes, there will be internet shops who sell CDs too probably. I am just interested to hear how you people as buying customers feel about this. I like for example to buy records from my home:) Basically I can also order cds from home...

Just returned from the firework shop to find this news from Rich Murray who spotted this news item... a real cracker that's sure to rocket up the charts...OK, no more fire work puns...

Anyway Rich spotted that Paul Gilbert is headed to the studio for another release. Which is double bonus news as Paul's truth in shredded birthday is on November 6th! Paul says:
It's November, 2007 and I'm back in the recording studio making a brand new CD! After the success of the "GET OUT OF MY YARD" CD and playing on G3 this year, I am feeling inspired and still very much in the mood for guitar music. So this new CD will be all-instrumental as well. I will announce more details soon, but now I have to dedicate my time to writing new songs and making new sounds on the electric guitar!

Also, I now have SHIRTS and HOODIES available for sale on the internet. Please go to the RACER X website to order and get more details. www.racerxband.com/store.htm

plus a 2000 interview on guitarmessenger.com

I wish I had time to go back to school! Just take advantage of where you are and learn everything you can. Organize your life to have as few distractions as possible and keep your hands moving on the guitar for hours every day. Play things that you LIKE, so that this experience is enjoyable and you want to keep doing it. Find other musicians to play with. Make recordings that I will want to listen to. Because then I can enjoy more music!

27-06-2007:
Another top quality interview from the boys at alloutguitar.com with Paulo Gilberto...some great inside information..including what I always suspected...what Kevin Elson did to Paul Gilberts guitar sound with Mr Big...

Paul Gilbert says
Initially I was just really excited to be in a band with Billy Sheehan: I was a huge Talas fan. I’d also heard Eric’s voice…! But what ultimately surprised me was the lack of volume shredding and excitement: I’d expected more! I was so much younger and less experienced than the other guys that I did not grab the bull by the horns and so was basically a follower for what Mr. Big became. Ultimately, to me the band was a bit of a disappointment never really reaching the excitement level I had anticipated despite the commercial success. After Racer X – where every millisecond of free space was to be filled with some humongous musical excess – Mr. Big was, in reality, pretty tame! The first album sounded to me like a lot like Bryan Adams filler material, although I think the second album had some really great songs.

Plus some more good news for the future...
The instrumental album was very hard; but I really enjoyed the process and the end result, and so I want to do another of those. Also, watching Joe and John really gets you an idea of how much a great instrumental tune can move an audience. I want to write more of those tunes.

Ye Hah...Saddle up Apone...Racer X dynamic duo is back...Bruce Bouillet and Paul Gilbert...plus that little old pressure cooker...Racer X! maybe I'll get to see them both this time around!...

This from Paul
I have very good news.

The double-guitar team from RACER X is back! Yes! I have been rehearsing with BRUCE BOUILLET, and he will be joining my band for our upcoming tour of Japan!

Bruce has just completed his own all-instrumental guitar album and has been concentrating 100% on playing guitar, so I thought it would be a great time to join forces and bring our wall of guitar solos, harmonies, and riffs to Japan for the first time ever!

Backed by the power of Mike Szuter on bass (and great vocals!) and the amazing Jeff Bowders on drums, Bruce and I will create the biggest, most exciting guitar sound since we played together last in 1988!

I can't wait to stand onstage, feel the guitar power, and share it with my fellow heavy rock fans in the audience.

I'm planning the setlist now. Of course I will be performing many songs from my new "GET OUT OF MY YARD" album. But I will also be playing some songs from my vocal solo albums, MR. BIG, and of course, RACER X.

Before we leave for Japan, we'll be playing at the VIPER ROOM in Los Angeles, on January 18th. I hope to add some other U.S. shows as well,
so keep checking back for additional dates.

Do not miss this amazing tour!!

Thank you,

Paul

Pseudo shredders prepare to meet thy maker. The king will finally release a solo album:
This from his official web site:

Guitar shredder Paul Gilbert (RACER X, ex-MR.BIG) has posted the following message on his official web site:

After living in Japan for six months, I'm back in the Los Angeles and starting production of my first guitar instrumental CD. I hope to record the most frightening guitar work I've ever done, and scare everyone within hearing distance with a towering monument of glowing guitar metal intenseness. The first step is practicing my guitar 100 hours a day. So off I go..."

Gilbert will be teaming up with DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy, Billy Sheehan (MR. BIG, DAVID LEE ROTH, TALAS) and Gary Cherone (VAN HALEN, EXTREME) to pay tribute to THE WHO by playing three very special shows across America. Dubbed AMAZING JOURNEY, the band have lined up the following dates:

May 27 - Whittier, CA @ The Center Theater Stage
May 30 - Chicago, IL @ Durty Nellie's
May 31 - New York City, NY @ BB King's Blues Clu

Technical Difficulties

Background:
Paul Gilbert was born on November 6, 1966. He was born in Carbondale, Illinois, he started playing guitar at the age of 5. After failing at the age of 11, he took up the guitar again. By the age of 15 he was not only touring local clubs with his band Tau Zero but was even spotlighted in Guitar Player alongside fellow up-and-comer Yngwie Malmsteen

and is the guitarist of his own band and Racer X and formerly of the band Mr. Big. After he parted ways with Mr. Big in 1996, Gilbert pursued his career as a solo guitarist and has evolved into a successful solo artist/singer/songwriter.

Born in Carbondale, Illinois, he started playing guitar at the age of 5, but soon gave up, becoming frustrated with just learning simple nursery rhymes. Around age 11, he took up the guitar again, but with a skewed memory of the technique; he played only with upstrokes, and only used his middle finger to fret notes. Frustrated after trying to play a fast metal song with a galloping rhythm using this technique, he took lessons, and his teacher explained the error of his ways. His technique corrected, Gilbert continued practicing, and by the age of 15 he was not only touring local clubs with his band Tau Zero but was even spotlighted in Guitar Player alongside fellow up-and-comer Yngwie Malmsteen.

Paul teaches at the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT). He works a great deal with GIT's division in Japan where he lived for a time before relocating to LA.

Another instrumentalcase.com This time the interview is Rusty Cooley.

Rusty:
No, I don’t think so at all. I pretty much learned everything from tab, because I hated sitting and trying to learn from records and cassettes. As a matter of fact, that’s how I figured out I could write my own music, and quit trying to play other people’s. I would sit down and try to learn something, and about after ten minutes I would have come up with about five to ten of my own riffs! So I said, “Forget that, I’m going to write my own songs!” Nowadays, learning other people’s music is like pulling teeth to me. I would rather create my own instead of copying. But I recently had a conversation with a guitarist of the opposite opinion. He said that he loved learning how to play other people’s music, and that it helped him learn how to write. I personally think you can get the same thing by simply listening to music by other artists. You can hear song structure just by listening - you don’t have to copy it note for note to grasp it. Not copying other people has helped me be more original.

Jason Becker comments on Rusty Cooleys playing in the outworld forum

"Yo Rusty, Hey, thank you so much for your "Outworld" CD, man. I really, really dig it; I am not just being polite (heh heh). The odd rhythms kick my ass. You are quite the shredder.

I know you dig Yngwie but I think you are way beyond him musically. You certainly don't need advice from an old crip like me, but I would explore more of yourself when playing solos. You are better and more imaginative than Yngwie so I would bring that out more like you do in your rhythms.

Also, maybe have a couple of softer sections in your heavy stuff. That would make your heavy stuff sound even bigger and badder in contrast.

Take it or leave it, you kick ass either way.

Peace and love brother, Jason"

11-02-2005: Outworld begins recording the long awaited debut cd February 8th at Spyder Studio in Houston Texas.

Background:
Rusty Cooley has been around for a long time and has been recognised by his peers as player of incredible picking ability and speed.

Early influences cover the spectrum from Allan Holdsworth, Frank Gambale to most of the Shrapnel label guitar stable from the eighties. Subsequent influences exude his current inspiration for hyper fast clean licks like those of Shawn Lane, Derek Taylor, Buckethead, Todd Duane, Scott Stine.

To find out more check out his full biography on his new web site including details of recordings and his excellent training DVDs from the Chops From Hell web site.

Current CD releases include his self-titled first solo album, Shawn Lane Remembered Vol. 1, Warmth in the Wilderness: A Tribute to Jason Becker vol II on the Lion Music label and a track on the highly respected Alchemists double CD from Liquid Note Records.

He also plays with Texas power metal band Outworld which has signed a deal with French record label Replica Records to release their debut album "Outworld".

His style will not be everyone's cup of tea, but you can't fail to be amazed at his abilities, even if you may prefer a more melodic song oriented approach. If you don't believe me check out the awesome playing on an 8 string guitar [Windows Media 18.7 MB] featured on his web site, along with a host of other videos. Check them out now.

Greg Howe: fusion on sail

News:
28-01-2008:
I forgot to post Greg's recent q1 year review, with lots of good things music wise:

The New Year in High Gear
Current mood: thankful

It's the day after NAMM and I'm kinda recuperating. NAMM is always fun and always exhausting. It was cool to hang out with old friends that I haven't seen in a long time as well as some of my sponsors. I saw Mike Varney briefly at the Spectra-flex cable booth and surprisingly he avoided giving me flack for not having the record done yet…very cool of him. The album is, however, coming along very nicely….a little bit slower than I hoped, but there are a lot of other things going on currently, making it difficult to dedicate the amount of time towards it that I would like, but like I said, it is coming along and is sounding pretty cool.

I talked at length with a friend of mine from Brazil who owns a very successful guitar company, and we have pretty much confirmed that we are going to go ahead with a signature electric guitar. We are going to be designing it from the ground up….in other words it won't be based on modifying a model that they already have. We are starting from scratch….body shape, neck style, scale length, wood, and etc… I'm really excited about this because it will be the first time in my career that I will actually have an opportunity to design something that feels and acts perfect for me…. Well, not the first time… but the first time I feel really good about it. There's a big difference between a company that says "we're willing to do a signature model" and a company that says "we'd really like to make you a signature model". These guys really want to do it, so I'm definitely excited.

Speaking of being excited, I'm really excited about the fact that we finally finished the "Introspection" tab book last week! Yes… I know it has taken over a year to complete and originally we predicted it would take only 2 months. Well, obviously I was wrong. It turned out to be one of the most tedious endeavors I'd ever been involved with. We might have pulled it off had we been able to dedicate 6 to 7 hours every day for 2 months straight, but unfortunately that approach would not have been very conducive to the overall maintenance of my career. Sorry to keep you guys waiting but I do feel good about the fact that I was there every step of the way and for every single note that was played on every one of those songs, so it won't be like so many other tab books out there that contain accurate notes and inaccurate fingerings. This will show exactly how it was played. We've begun the process of getting the artwork and duplicates made and we are aiming to have it out in about 2 months. Woops… did I just say 2 months? OK, we are aiming to have it out as soon as possible .

Well, what the heck, since we're on the subject of inaccurate predictions, I might as well add that the lesson website believe it or not, really is coming along and really is going to happen. I've had some major setbacks along the way but we're totally back on track now. You guys have been patient beyond belief so I promise not to let you down.

Thanks a million for hanging in there and I'll try to keep you posted as things progress.

Peace,

Greg

Collection - "The Shrapnel Years" contains Howe's best instrumental musical moments and is comprised of aggressive rock and fusion compositions which highlight Greg's incredible technique, memorable melodies and complex songwriting. These tracks contain standout performances by some of the greatest musicians in progressive music, including drummers Dennis Chambers and Atma Anur and bassists Billy Sheehan and Victor Wooten, among others. This compilation's focus is Howe's highly technical, yet very melodic, guitar style that has established him as one of the most innovative guitar instrumentalists of our time and a true guitarist's guitarist.

Greg Howe will be the new guitarist for Planet X according to Derek Sherinian:

ok here it is- We have met with Greg yesterday. He is open to joining Planet X - unfortunately due to contractual obligations, he will not be able to commit with us until 2007. I think that this is worth the wait, as Greg is a phenomenal player. Regarding the current Planet X record, we will issue a status report at the end of the month. We are sorry for all the delays, we just want it to be the best it can be. Thanks
Derek

Greg Howe has provided recording assistance to Francesco Fareri for his "Forbidden Dimension" release on 28th July 2005.

Background:
Greg Howe has appeared many times on truthinshredding as a key influence of many guitar players. So he is a premier league player and a recommend guitar star who has extended the field of fusion guitar playing, so should appear in your CD and DVD collections.

He started playing guitar from the age of ten, and as he moved into his teens he became heavily influenced by Eddie Van Halen. He concentrated on learning music theory and created a band with his brother Al.

Things were set to change for Greg when in 1988 he was picked up by Mike Varney Shrapnel records label, following on from Mike's signing of players like Tony Macalpine, Vinnie Moore and Yngwie Malmsteen. But he broke the Shrapnel neo classical mould delivering the self titled Greg Howe album, setting the guitar work alight with his own brand of blues rock fusion. The album featured the bass talents of Billy Sheehan and drummer Atma Anur.

Greg then recorded to vocal rock album with his brother Al and the band Howe II.
These CD's:
highlight his playing in a modern rock context and would greatly appeal to Van Halen and rock fans in general.

Then in 1993 he released an altogether more serious work, Introspection, that was the start of the more jazz fusion based blues rock playing that we know and love today.

These were followed by:
Since then his skills have made him a sort after guitarist replacing Jennifer Batten in 1996 on Michael Jackson's History tour through Europe and Asia, touring the U.S. and Europe in 2000 with Enrique Iglesias, making two separate tours of the states in 2001 and 2002 with NSYNC and doing a promotional tour in 2003 with Justin Timberlake.

He's also spotlighted upcoming players like Prashant Aswani providing them him with production duties for the "Revelation" release and Bass, Keyboards, Drum Programming, Acoustic Guitar, Production, Engineering, Mixing on 2002 "Duality" release.

Check out these really great interviews:
You can also buy the new live DVD of the Gentle Hearts tour or the relatively old Hot Rocks video.
