I visited jolly old Newport, UK to catch up with the tail end of the current tour. This is the first time I've seen Symphony X live, so was waiting with baited breath to see if they could deliver. I was not disappointed... this band are super tight, super melodic, and deliver enough musical fire power to sink a battleship! I was accompanied to the gig by number one son shred junior-senior, who was also super impressed particularly with his favourite, the opener "Set the World on Fire". The show was enhanced during the half time break as I managed to catch up with my old mate, Matt Williams, from Liquid Note Records. We talked about all things guitar, live music and Liquid Note records. Matt is currently organising the final Liquid Note release featuring the great playing talents Stefan Rosqvist, plus some special guests. The material from this CD is some of the best yet to come from the label. Look out for more news on this release in due course. SYMPHONY X - Communion And The Oracle (Live - Gods Of Metal) For shred junior-senior Symphony X - Set the World on Fire 03-11-2007: Another fine interview from the guys at guitarmessenger.com , this time Michael Romeo gets the third degree ear bend.Oh man, now I don’t practice at all… nah, that’s not true. I practice once in a while. Or I practice if I feel like I’m getting rusty. I mean, sometimes there is just times you want to practice and maybe try some new things. Now it’s more about the writing and doing things like that. But in the past, yeah it was full on practicing all the time. In the beginning I got some lessons from a good a finger style guy. He was great all around, but he was a great finger style classical guy. And later you know, learning chords, the pentatonic scale, and a lot of that. And after that, a lot of it was self-taught just by learning Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Uli Jon Roth. And then just right down the line – Paul Gilbert, Yngwie Malmsteen… all those guys. 09-10-2007: A change of Venue for UK date in Glasgow: The Dream Theater / Symphony X show in Glasgow on 11 October has had a change of venue; it will now be held at Braehead Arena. 05-09-2007: Michael Romeo and Symphony X expand their European tour dates! Michael Romeo shredding super fast! 12-08-2007: A 10-minute audio interview with Symphony X guitarist Michael Romeo conducted by Norway's Metal Express Radio . 28-07-2007: Insideout records have published the first Symphony X CD...look out for the band on tour with Dream Theater...not sure I can handle all the guitar in one evening ;o) Symphony X "Serpent's Kiss" 20-07-2007: The Shredacademy team lined up a Michael Romeo interview : Mikes says: You always have to try new stuff, you know. Like you said, yeah there is a lot of the things I do and it definitely appears here and there but I think when you are writing, you are trying to find something a little different or like you said something that sounds like a violin line or some kind of riff so you know, always try find something different. It keeps you being creative, try and push you to find something cool and at the same time it sounds cool. At the end of the day you are still trying to write a song, you are still trying to balance the technique with something that sounds cool and yeah you know just experiment, noodle around. A lot of the riffs the come about by you just sitting there banging on the guitar a little bit, just riffing around and noodling and then all of a sudden you stumble on something you never did and you are like oh wow that's kind of cool, let's see if I can build on that and that is usually how it comes about. Most of the time, most of the riffs and most of the little licks and things, you just kind of stumble on it without thinking about it too much, for me that is kind of what I like to do. Mike was asked about plans for a new solo cd: Yeah I think this year I am going to commit to doing one because that CD is like ancient, back then I was using an 8-track back then, so yeah I really want to do something and with this record there was a lot of material left over that we ended up not using. This year or early next year I'll start putting some stuff together. Paradise Lost Sales Symphony X reached the Billboard Top 200 for the first time with the release of Paradise Lost, and would like to thank all of the fans who made that possible! International sales figures for the release of Paradise Lost were as follows: USA: #123 France: #60 Germany: #50 Netherlands: #59 Norway: #41 Sweden: #32 UK: #169 (rock/metal chart: #12) 02-07-2007: An update on the bonus DVD with the new CD:"World Management would like to clear up any misinformation about the attached 'free bonus DVD' that is shrink wrapped to the new SYMPHONY X CD 'Paradise Lost'. The free fan bonus DVD attached is and was always intended to be an extra fan bonus for a small limited run of digis. It was shrink-wrapped onto the actual disc and is a bonus home-video-style collection of a few shows from the band's archives. Please enjoy these clips for their intent. "A lot of intense effort has gone into the writing, recording and packaging of this new CD and we are all very happy with the result. It is, after all, about the new music. For all the DVD fans, the band will make a professional DVD sometime in the future and rest assured we will spend lots of creative energy when the time comes for that. In the meantime enjoy 'Paradise Lost' and we shall see you all hopefully out on tour in 2007/2008. Thanks for your support. "Basically this DVD was never meant to be any big professionally done thing; it was intended to be a free extra goodie comprised of home-video-type material meant for a limited run through a small number of vendors (if it WERE meant to be something big, they'd have done far more than just stuff it in with the CD). The band is not pleased that it appeared to be portrayed as more than it really was, and that they have fans who feel that they were ripped off as a result; they sincerely hope that you all know that that was never their intent." 25-06-2007: A new exclusive interview with http://avanzadametallica.net In response to be asked if Michael has a plans for a new solo CD:"I always say that I do what I want to, but all this time I’ve been with the band, especially with this record, I’m with them every day. I did almost everything on this record because we decided that we wanted a guitar driven record, so i’ve been creating in every minute of the day. And we did all the recording in my house, at my studio so for me all my time is devoted to the band, so is difficult to think in a solo thing, we have so much to think... the touring could be done, and thinking of the record could be done." and when asked about people who steal music by downloading illegal mp3..."In one way it’s good because in that way many people could discover the band, people that have never heard the band. But at the same time there’s always the negative side, because many people are not paying for it, but if they download our music, it will invite them to buy the record". 22-06-2007: UK tour dates as support for Dream theater what more could anyone one want...OK...yes a CD...Due on June 26 via Inside Out Music (June 25 in Japan via JVC Victor Entertainment Inc.), "Paradise Lost"... Musically, Symphony X took all the ‘aural essentials’ of their past records, putting the symphonic moments where they needed to be, possessing the appropriate amount of neo-classical traces, and the placing melodic elements all over the place; all the while keeping their virtuoso approach in full force throughout. Later he was influenced by bands like Judas Priest,Iron Maiden, BlackSabbath, Rush, Uli Jon Roth, Alcatrazz and Yngwie Malmsteen. Since then he has broadened out and has been influenced by: Paul Gilbert, Alan Holdsworth, Frank Gambale, Marty Friedman, Jason Becker, Kansas, ELP and UK. He also listened to Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Rimsky-Korsakov, Wagner, Stravinsky, Holst, and John Williams.
